Description

The lock-keeper's cottage, located on the south side of Lock Number 7 of the Ashton Canal, was built in 1865, as indicated by the date on the door lintel. It is constructed of brown brick in stretcher bond, featuring a band of black and white brick, painted sandstone dressings, and a slate roof. The cottage has a double-depth, double-fronted plan and stands two storeys tall with a symmetrical facade that has two windows.

At the center, there is a gabled porch with the date "A.D. 1865" on the lintel and a pitched roof with projected verges. The ground floor has transomed tripartite casement windows, while the first floor features 2-light casements. All windows have raised sills and large rectangular lintels, with a brick sill-band running around the building. The roof has overhanging eaves and verges, and gable chimneys. The cottage is part of a group that includes Lock Number 5 and Bridge Number 9 (Mill Street Bridge).
