Description
Ashton Canal Lock Number 9 is located immediately east of Clayton Lane Bridge in Manchester. Built between 1792 and 1799 for the Manchester and Ashton-under-Lyne Canal Company, the lock has been partly rebuilt and renovated. It features large blocks of millstone grit and wooden gates. This narrow lock has a chamber that is 7 feet wide and includes a covered overflow channel on the north side. The bullnose at the lower end has been rebuilt using blue engineering brick, with double gates at the lower end and a single gate at the upper end. It is the seventh in a series of 13 similar locks, all of which are in working order.
