Description

The Ashton Canal Towpath Bridge over the junction with the former Stockport Branch Canal is a bridge likely built around 1800, although it has been altered since then. It is constructed from red brick and sandstone rubble, featuring cast-iron beams. The horizontal span of the bridge is supported by these cast-iron beams, with long sloped abutment ramps on either side; the ramp on the east side is mostly made of rubble. The parapets have ridged copings, and the deck is cobbled. There is a similar ramp at right angles on the south side, which has been recently restored. The former branch canal is now filled in, leaving only a small basin on the south side of the bridge.
