Description
Bridge Number 4 over Ashton Canal is a public road bridge located in Manchester, likely built around 1800. It is constructed of red brick in English garden wall bond, with elements of cast iron and sandstone. The bridge has a narrow rectangular shape that narrows to the width of the lock. It features a short horizontal span between vertical end walls made of brick abutments, which have rounded sandstone corners with block capitals. The bridge carries cast-iron beams and likely has flagstone flooring. At each end, there are broad pilasters, a simple moulded cornice, and a parapet made of two courses of massive dressed blocks.
