Description

This is a canal lock, built circa 1792-1799 as part of the Manchester and Ashton-under-Lyne Canal. It is constructed of large blocks of millstone grit, with wooden gates. The lock is a narrow type, with a chamber 7 feet wide, and features a covered overflow channel on its south side. Stone staircases are located at the lower entry point on the west end. It is the second in a sequence of thirteen similar locks, all of which remain functional. The lock forms a group with a former lock-keeper’s cottage and a bridge over the Islington Branch canal.
