Description
The Store Street Aqueduct in Manchester is a canal aqueduct built around 1794 to 1799. It is made of coursed squared sandstone and is approximately 70 meters long. The aqueduct crosses Store Street at about a 45-degree angle and features a skewed semi-elliptical archway, although the soffit is now rendered. On the north side, there are six triangular buttresses that resemble cutwaters with refuges, while the south side has four. The arches are adorned with radiating voussoirs, and there are two decorative bands on the south side and one on the north side, topped with coped parapets. This structure is likely one of the earliest canal aqueducts to feature a skewed arch.
