Description
Ashton Canal Lock Number 1 is located immediately east of Great Ancoats Street in Manchester. This canal lock was built between 1792 and 1799 and has undergone some alterations. It is constructed from large blocks of millstone grit and features wooden gates. The lock is a narrow type, with a chamber that is 7 feet wide. On the south side, there is an overflow channel, and a central island with a curved taper at both ends. Stone staircases flank the lower entry at the west end. This lock is the first in a series of 13 similar locks, all of which are still in working order.
