Description
Lock Number 3 on the south side of Ancoats Hospital is a canal lock built between 1792 and 1799 for the Manchester and Ashton-under-Lyne Canal Company. It features large blocks of millstone grit and wooden gates. This narrow lock has a chamber that is 7 feet wide and includes a covered overflow channel on the south side. Stone staircases flank the lower entry at the west end, while there is a convex curved retaining wall at the east end of the south side. This lock is the third in a series of 13 similar locks, all of which are still in working order.
