Description
32 and 34 Laystall Street is a garment warehouse built in 1838, with some alterations. The building features red brick in Flemish bond, accented with moulded buff and white terracotta, and has a rectangular plan. It showcases an eclectic style with Romanesque elements. The three-storey facade has five windows and is symmetrical, with the central bay projecting forward.
The centre includes a segmental-headed waggon doorway surrounded by terracotta detailing, which features shafts and a keystone. Above this, there is a first-floor oriel window with two round-headed lights and a Tudor-flower band. The second floor has an arcaded three-light window, and above it, the lettering "ESTABLISHED 1838" is attached.
On either side of the central entrance, there are round-headed doorways at ground level, round-headed windows on the first floor, and square-headed windows on the second floor. Coupled windows are present on all floors, with square-headed ones at ground and second levels, and round-headed ones on the first floor set within large round-headed blank arches, all featuring Tudor-flower sill-bands. The windows are richly decorated with moulded terracotta, including twisted shafts with foliated caps. The building also has enriched bracketed eaves, showcasing an unusual degree of High Victorian decoration for a relatively small structure.
