Description
Ashton Canal Lock Number 14 is a canal lock built between 1792 and 1799 for the Manchester and Ashton-under-Lyne Canal Company. It features large blocks of millstone grit and wooden gates. This narrow lock has a chamber that is 7 feet wide, with an overflow channel located on the north side. Stone staircases flank the lower entry, and there are double gates at the lower end and a single gate at the upper end. It is the twelfth lock in a series of 13 similar locks, all of which are in working order.
