Description
Ashton Canal Bridge Number 9, also known as Mill Street Bridge, is a public road bridge over the Ashton Canal, likely built around 1800. The bridge is constructed of brown brick in English garden wall bond, with some sandstone ashlar and cast-iron beams. It features a narrow rectangular shape that narrows to the width of the lock. The horizontal span is supported by cast-iron beams and has flagstone flooring, which is carried on vertical side walls made of brick, topped with gritstone copings. The piers on the west side are projected, while the ones on the towpath side are curved and banded, currently supporting large cast-iron pipes. The bridge includes broad pilasters and a brick parapet with stone coping. On the east side, it connects to the roving bridge of Mill Street lock. This bridge is part of a group that includes the lock and the associated lock-keeper's cottage.
