Description
Ashton Canal Lock Number 8 is located to the southeast of Ashton New Road in Manchester. This canal lock was built between 1792 and 1799 for the Manchester and Ashton-under-Lyne Canal Company and has since been renovated. It is constructed from large blocks of millstone grit, with some red brick, and features wooden gates. The lock is of a narrow type, with a chamber that is 7 feet wide, and includes an overflow channel on the north side. Stone staircases flank the lower entry. This lock is the sixth in a series of 13 similar locks, all of which are still in working order.
