Description

This canal lock and associated roving bridge date from around 1792 to 1799, built for the Manchester and Ashton-under-Lyne Canal Company. The lock is constructed of large millstone grit blocks with wooden gates. It is a narrow type, with a chamber 7 feet wide. The north jamb of the lower gates is inscribed with “1865.” The roving bridge, which crosses the lower lock entry, has a cobbled, dog-legged ramp on its north side, along with a stone slab wall and cast-iron fencing. This lock forms a group with the lock-keeper's cottage to the south and Mill Street Bridge to the west. It is the fifth in a series of 13 similar locks that are all currently in working order.
