Description

The Lock Keeper's Cottage at Lock Number 91, located next to Gaythorn Tunnel, is a derelict building dating from around 1805, with some alterations. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, featuring sandstone dressings and is now painted white above the basement level, topped with a slate roof. The cottage has a rectangular, single-depth, double-fronted plan and stands three storeys high with three windows. The first storey serves as a full-height basement, while the second storey is effectively the ground floor at street level. The basement wall projects in the center and to the left, creating an access deck from the street to the doorway, which is protected by the remains of cast-iron railings. The doorway is round-headed, with imposts and a keystone, and has a recessed inner surround with imposts. The windows are large, with raised sills and flat-arched heads, but are currently either blocked or damaged. The building features a stone parapet and a hipped roof. It is part of a group with Lock Number 91.
