Description
Rochdale Canal Lock Number 91 is located at the east end of Gaythorn Tunnel and was built between 1804 and 1805 for the Rochdale Canal Company. The lock is constructed of coursed squared sandstone and features wooden gates. It has a chamber that is 14 feet wide, with pairs of gates at both ends. There is a ladder in the center of the north side and a towpath "island" on the south side, which includes a curved stone staircase at the lower end. This lock is the eighth in a series of nine locks that connect the former Rochdale Canal basin at Dale Street with the Bridgewater Canal basin at Castlefield, and it is still in working order. The lock forms a group with the Lock Keeper's Cottage located on the north side.
