Description
The floodgate on the east side of Knott Mill Bridge in Manchester is a structure likely built around 1765 by James Brindley for the Duke of Bridgewater. It has been altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. Made of stone, this floodgate is part of the hydraulic system that allowed the Bridgewater Canal terminus basin to utilize the River Medlock. The river was diverted through a culvert from this location to Potato Wharf, and the canal overflow was returned to the river via a weir known as the Giant's Basin. This simple structure holds national historical importance. It is associated with other significant features, including the culvert arches on New Elm Road and the Giant's Basin at Potato Wharf.
