Description
The Castlefield Railway Viaduct, built around 1880, is a railway viaduct located in Manchester, running from the former Central Station. It initially goes south-west and then west, dividing into two sections over Castlefield before rejoining to the west of the River Medlock. The structure features cast iron and wrought iron elements, with red brick used to the east of Duke Street. It is supported by cast iron drum piers that rise to square castellated towers, which hold up a metal lattice parapet. The viaduct also includes castellated brick piers with stone dressings that support Gothic style skew bridges over the River Medlock and adjacent roadways. East of Duke Street, the viaduct is constructed of brick with segmental arches and castellated brick piers. At the western end, there is a blue brick bridge that crosses Dawson Street.
