Description

The Former St Matthews Sunday School, now an office, is a mission church and Sunday school built in 1827, as indicated by the date over the door. It features red brick in Flemish bond with some sandstone dressings and has a rectangular plan with an apsidal south end, situated on an island site. The building is designed in a simple Gothic style and has a gable facing the street. It is two storeys high with a cellar and comprises three symmetrical bays, with pilastered corners and a first-floor sill band. The slightly raised centre has two semicircular steps leading up to a two-centred arched doorway, which includes a fanlight with intersecting glazing bars. Above the door is a large stone plaque inscribed "SUNDAY SCHOOL / MDCCCXXVII". The first floor features a large two-centred arched three-light window with intersecting glazing bars, along with another worn stone plaque above it. Smaller two-centred arched windows with Y-tacery are present in both floors of the outer bays. The gable has a parapet with an oculus, which is now open due to a lowered roof. The sides of the building have five windows, designed in a similar style.
