Description
Rochdale Canal Lock Number 92 and Castle Street Bridge is a canal bridge with an attached ramp on the west side and a lock on the east side, built around 1804 and altered since. It is constructed of coursed squared millstone grit and features wooden gates. The bridge has a single segmental arch with rusticated voussoirs, a keystone, and an arch-band, along with a plain band above. The slab-wall parapets curve at the outer ends, and there is a ramp at a right angle to the north-west corner. The lock is 14 feet wide and has pairs of gates at both ends, with an overflow tunnel that includes a circular brick-lined shaft on the south side of Castle Street. This lock is the last in a series of nine that connect the Rochdale and Bridgewater Canals.
