Description
The Bridgewater Canal Offices, originally the Officers' Mess of the Manchester Regiment, date from around 1800 and have undergone alterations. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with sandstone dressings and a slate roof, and is designed in a Georgian style. It has an L-shaped plan and stands two storeys tall, featuring ten bays that are designed to resemble two symmetrical five-bay houses. Each house has a three-bay pedimented center that slightly projects forward. Architectural details include a rendered plinth, a first-floor sill-band, a modillioned wooden eaves cornice, and coped gables. The windows are 12-pane sashed with flat-arched heads. There are two chimneys located centrally on either side of the ridge. To the left, there is a single-storey, one-bay extension that includes a porch with a moulded stone doorcase, a rectangular overlight, and a cornice. The rear of the building, which faces Crown Street to the west, features sashed windows set in arched reveals and two arched doorways.
