Description
Ellen Royd Bridge is a canal bridge built around 1798 for the Rochdale Canal Company. It is constructed from coursed squared stone and ashlar. The bridge features a horseshoe arch, with an ashlar band below the parapet that has triangular section ashlar coping. On either side of the arch, there are pilaster buttresses with bands that rise as ashlar piers at the level of the parapet, topped with raised pyramidal coping. The canal walls beneath the bridge curve inwards. For more information on the history of canal construction, refer to Sowerby Long Bridge.
