Description
Ashton Canal Lock Number 15 is a canal lock built between 1792 and 1799 for the Manchester and Ashton-under-Lyne Canal Company. It has been renovated and is constructed from large blocks of millstone grit. This narrow lock features a chamber that is 7 feet wide and includes an overflow channel on the north side. Stone staircases flank the lower entry, and there are double gates at the lower end and a single gate at the upper end. It is the thirteenth lock in a series of 13 similar locks, all of which are still in working order.
