Description
The milestone on Keighley Road in Ilkley is a stone obelisk dating from the 17th or 18th century, standing approximately 1 metre high and positioned by the roadside. The front and sides are squared, with the front face featuring the inscription: "To Keighley/ 4 M," accompanied by a crudely incised hand pointing left, and "To Ilkley," with a hand pointing right. There may be additional words or marks below the hand, but they are not legible.
Historically, this stone is marked as a benchmark (BM) and a milestone (MS) on the 1894 edition of the Ordnance Survey map, indicating distances of 4 miles to Keighley and 1 mile to Ilkley. It also appears as a milestone on the 1851 edition of the map. The stone may have been created during the 18th century when turnpikes were established, shifting road maintenance costs to users, or it could be an earlier guide marker for travelers crossing the moors.
The milestone is designated at Grade II due to its age, potentially dating before 1840, and its unique design with hand-carved inscriptions.
