Description

Westwood Lodge is a picturesque detached house built around 1870, located at right angles to Westwood Drive, with a hill descending to the right. The building has two storeys and attics, constructed from coursed rubble and topped with a slate roof featuring terracotta chimney pots.

The main east front is tripartite, with the central and left-hand sections gabled, both adorned with pierced bargeboards, while the right-hand section includes a dormer. Each section contains one window, with the first-floor window in the central section being cusped. The central section also features a tower above a Gothic doorway, which has colonettes and a gable. The right-hand section has two-light windows, and the left-hand section includes a single-light window on the second floor, a two-light window on the first floor, and a three-light bay on the ground floor, which is also detailed with colonettes and a frieze of roundels above that forms a first-floor balcony.

To the left, towards the road, there is a one-storey conservatory, reportedly used for a big game collection. This conservatory has nine bays of pink colonettes enclosing two casement windows at the right end and raised panels elsewhere, along with a continuous band of foliage at the level of the capitals, a frieze of cusped roundels above, and semi-circular carved window boxes below. The glass roof adds to its charm.

Inside, the lodge features a large staircase window with full-length stained glass figures of Faith and Hope, along with small panels over the inner entrance. The decorative engraving on the panel in each of the double outer doors and the elaborate encaustic tiles on the lobby floor enhance the interior's character.
