Description

St John’s Flats is a pair of flats constructed between 1878 and 1879 by R Norman Shaw. The building is situated on a sloping site, slightly set back from Queens Road in Ilkley. It is two and three storeys high with a basement and attics. The exterior is of squared rubble construction. The west end of the building is angled slightly southwards, contributing to an asymmetrical composition.

The south-facing facade, which faces the road, has five windows. The leftmost window is modern, the second is an oriel window with castellated detailing and carved belly, and the remaining windows are primarily mullioned and transomed. The east end features an entrance, now blind, with an almost flat arch, moulded with a pendant swelling in the centre, and a dripmould above it. A prominent gable chimney projects over carved corbels, and the fenestration is scattered. The attics have been modernised and are clad in slate. Originally built for R W Atkinson, the building was converted into flats around 1955.
