Description

The entrance and office block of Saltaire Mills was built between 1851 and 1853 by architects Lockwood and Mawson for Titus Salt. It is constructed from hammer-dressed stone with ashlar dressings and features a Welsh slate roof. The building has two storeys, with a basement level on the left due to the sloping ground. The facade is designed in an Italianate style and is symmetrical, consisting of 20 bays arranged in the pattern A. B. C. B. A.

The central section, or frontispiece, has three bays and includes a giant portal with a round-arched head that extends into the first storey. This portal is topped by a tall turret with a segmental pediment and flanking scrolls. On either side of the portal are canted bays with three lights, featuring a round-arched centre light. The B bays contain six windows on each floor, with round arches on the ground floor supported by rusticated voussoirs, and cambered heads on the first floor. The A bays project one bay and are three windows wide, similar to the others. The building is finished with a deep bracketed cornice and a hipped roof.

The interior has not been inspected. This structure is part of the Saltaire model village.
