Description

Saltaire Mills - North Block (New Mill) and chimney is a mill building and chimney constructed in 1868 by Lockwood and Mawson for Titus Salt. The structure is made of hammer-dressed stone with a Welsh slate roof. It consists of two four-storey blocks arranged at a right angle, with lower sheds attached to the north and east sides. The larger block faces south and features 28 bays of industrial casements arranged in four rows, running east-west parallel to the canal. The smaller block, located on the west side of the complex, has 14 bays of industrial casements with segmental heads on its west facade. A wing projects from the left side of this block, and to the right is a small entrance lodge, with the block framed by rusticated pilaster-quoins.

Between the two blocks stands the chimney, which is inspired by the campanile of the church of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari in Venice. The chimney has a square tower adorned with paired round-arched sunk panels, above which are three-light round-arched louvred openings with hoodmoulds. A deep bracketed cornice supports an octagonal lantern featuring a ground-arched opening.

Attached to the east is an additional mill building added around 1880. This three-storey structure sits over a basement and measures 22 bays by nine bays, featuring continuous raised cill bands and a bracketed ashlar eaves cornice. The corners of this building are articulated with rustication on the ground floor and giant pilasters that span the two upper floors.

The interior has not been inspected. This site is part of the Saltaire model village.
