Description

Shipley College, originally a dining room for a mill, was built around 1853 by Lockwood and Mawson for Titus Salt. The building is constructed of hammer-dressed stone with ashlar dressings and features a Welsh slate roof. It is a single-storey structure with seven bays. The central door has eight deep panels set within an eared architrave. Flanking the door are three bays on each side, framed by pilasters that support a full entablature with a bracketed cornice. Each bay contains a window. Above the central bay is the Salt coat of arms, which is supported by scrolls, topped with an open pediment and adorned with a festooned base. The roof is hipped, and the rear elevation has three gables, each featuring a semicircular window. The left side of the building has five tall panels with altered windows and corniced heads. There are later additions on the right side and at the rear.

The railings return to the building on both the right and left sides, with those on the left continuing down both sides of the railway steps. These railings are made of cast iron, with square-section railings and square cast-iron piers topped with pyramidal caps.

In the dining room, approximately 600 breakfasts and 700 dinners were served daily. Shipley College is part of the Saltaire model village.
