Description
The grinding hull, located 15 meters north of number 120A on Broomspring Lane in Sheffield, is a building dating from around 1864, with some alterations and additions made in the mid-20th century. It is constructed of brick and features a slate roof with two brick stacks. The building is a single storey and has a six-window range.
The entrance is an off-centre board door, which is flanked on the left by a 12-pane sash window. To the right of the door, there are two wooden cross casements with altered glazing. At the left end of the building, there is a single-storey lean-to addition that is positioned at right angles, featuring a three-light glazing bar casement to the right and a small 20th-century window to the left. To the right, there is another single-storey lean-to made of corrugated iron, which includes a six-pane window.
Although the interior was not inspected, it is noted that this building was used for grinding decorators' spatulas and scrapers that were made in the nearby blade forge, indicating its role as part of a small industrial unit typical of Sheffield's industrial organization.
