Description

The Halfway War Memorial is a structure commemorating the First World War and Second World War, built in 1922 to designs by Mr. H W Roberts of Sheffield. It is made from Darley Dale stone and features a cross set on a square pedestal, which stands on a three-stepped base.

Located on the north side of Station Road, opposite Halfway Nursery Infant School, the memorial consists of a stone Celtic wheel cross on a collared shaft with a moulded foot, all atop a high pedestal. The south face of the cross head displays a central boss with the raised dates 1914 and 1918 on the horizontal arms. The south face of the cross shaft is adorned with a relief carving of two rifles, a flag, flowers, and foliage bound with ribbon. The moulded foot features relief-carved panels depicting a field gun enclosed by a wreath.

The high pedestal has an egg and dart cornice and a moulded foot, and it bears an incised inscription painted black on the south face that reads: "ERECTED TO THE HONOURED MEMORY / OF THE / MEN OF THIS VILLAGE WHO GAVE / THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914 – 1918," along with 20 names. The moulded foot also includes the dates 1939 and 1945 with one name in between. It is uncertain whether this name belongs to a casualty of the First World War or the Second World War, but it is likely to be from the former, as a 1922 news article about the unveiling mentions that the memorial was inscribed with 21 names. Additionally, the south face of the top step is inscribed with the names of five casualties from the Second World War.
