Description
31 South Street is a mid-17th century building that has been converted from two houses into one. It features coursed squared stone with a rendered and color-washed first floor and rear. The roof is made of Welsh slate and has two ridge stacks and a single rear wall stack, all of which are rendered. The building is two storeys high and has a four-window range in an L-plan layout.
The street front displays, on the left, a two-light and a three-light 20th-century mullioned casement window, followed by a tall three-light cross casement. The cross-wing gable on the right has a 20th-century three-light casement. Below this, to the right, is a corniced stone doorcase with a framed panelled door, flanked by single three-light windows that have chamfered stone mullions and label moulds. To the left, there is a similar four-light window, followed by a board door with a heavy stone lintel and imposts.
The right return of the building has three 20th-century windows with stone flush mullions arranged in a 3:1:2 light pattern. Below this is a full-width 20th-century lean-to addition with a stone slate roof. The left return features a small window with a stone surround and an even smaller loop. Inside, the building contains crucks and a relocated staircase.
