Description
The stable-block with attached wing walls, located immediately to the east of Clifton House, is likely from the late 18th century and was built for Joshua Walker. It is constructed from deeply-coursed, dressed sandstone and features a Welsh slate roof. The building is small and square, with two stories and three openings on the first floor, presenting symmetrical facades. The doors at each end of the entrance front have ashlar surrounds, and the lintels extend as quoins. There is a first-floor band beneath a square hatch with a projecting sill, flanked by round pitching holes, all in dressed stone surrounds. The building is topped with a moulded cornice and has a hipped roof.
On the rear, there are two tall, round-arched recesses, with the right one containing an inserted casement. The wing wall to the front left was renewed around 1973 and is not of special interest, while the old wall to the front right features a doorway in an ashlar surround and terminates at an end pier. This pier supports a taller, curved section of wall that has a band and returns to link with the rear of the stable-block. The old wing wall to the rear left connects with outbuildings associated with Clifton House. This structure is included for its group value.
