Description

North Lodge, along with the linking wall and gateway to Wentworth Park, was built around 1793 by John Carr of York for the fourth Earl Fitzwilliam. The structure features coursed, squared sandstone and rusticated ashlar, topped with a graduated Welsh slate roof.

The lodge is designed with a two-storey central section and single-storey wings, comprising three bays and accessed from the right side. The gateway is positioned at a right angle to the front right of the lodge, connected by a linking wall. The lodge includes a plinth and a recessed, central, round-arched panel that is flanked by rusticated pilasters. This panel houses a sixteen-pane sash window with a projecting sill and a flat arch, along with a casement beneath an archivolt. A continuous impost band runs along the structure, topped with a dentil cornice and a hipped roof. The wings feature sixteen-pane sash windows flanked by projecting end piers, with ashlar parapet coping that aligns with the impost band, and four ball finials, although the stonework to the left has been largely renewed. There is a stack located at the rear of the two-storey section.

The gateway has a plinth and rusticated square gate piers, each adorned with a band beneath a frieze featuring paterae, a cornice, and a ball finial. The wall to the left, which has ashlar coping, connects with the lodge, while the wall to the right ends at an ashlar pier topped with a ball finial.
