Description
Rainborough Lodges and Gates is a pair of lodges with attached gate piers and a gate, forming one dwelling. They were built between 1798 and 1804 and are attributed to the architect John Carr. The lodges were commissioned for William Wentworth Fitzwilliam, the 4th Earl Fitzwilliam. Constructed from ashlar sandstone with graduated Welsh slate roofs, they feature wrought-iron gates.
The lodges are symmetrical and square in shape, with inner and outer wing walls and a central carriage gateway. Each lodge is two storeys high with a single window. They have a plinth and rusticated quoins at the lower stage. The tall, central round-headed sash windows have glazing bars and are adorned with a moulded impost and archivolt, all set within a recessed round-arched panel that includes a Greek-key impost band and archivolt. The frieze features festooned paterae and is topped with a modillioned cornice. Each lodge has a hipped roof with a corniced central stack that also has paterae.
The inner return of each lodge contains a panelled door within an architrave, featuring a plain frieze and pediment, all set in a round-arched recess. Below this is a 6-pane sash window beneath an archivolt. Each inner wing wall has an iron gate in a round-arched opening and ends at rusticated piers that display a Greek-key band beneath a frieze decorated with swags and paterae. The cornice is topped with statues of lions in a couchant position. The simple wrought-iron gates have paired horizontal rails, decorative scrollwork, and a central vase finial on the top rail. The outer wing walls each have a blind round-arched opening and terminate at rusticated end piers. The lodges are situated along the line of a former avenue leading to Wentworth Park North Lodge.
