Description
Christ Church is a church built in 1855 by Pritchett and Sons, constructed from rock-faced sandstone with a slate roof. The building features a three-stage west tower and a five-bay aisled nave that includes a south porch. There is also a two-bay chancel with gabled projections on the north and south sides, all designed in the Gothic revival style. The windows are adorned with Decorated-style tracery and hoodmoulds that have head-carved stops. The church has buttresses between the bays and diagonal buttresses at the angles and lower two stages of the tower, along with shaped kneelers and gable copings.
The tower has offset bands at each stage, a door on the south side beneath a two-light window, and an elaborate crocketed niche on the west side. The second stage features a single light window beneath a clock, while the belfry has paired two-light openings. Corner gargoyles are positioned beneath a pierced parapet, although the pinnacles have been removed. The nave includes a gabled porch at bay two, with the other bays featuring three-light windows. The chancel is lower and has gabled projections at the angles with the aisles, along with a five-light east window and a gable cross.
Inside, the church has cyma-moulded piers and arches in the nave arcades, with foliate carved capitals. The vaulted roof has ribs that spring from angel corbels and is decorated with gilded bosses. The furnishings are contemporary oak, including a rood screen.
