Description
The Old Parish Lock-up is an early 19th-century lock-up located on Well Lane in Wath Upon Dearne. This small, two-storey building is constructed from coursed, rock-faced sandstone and features a stone slate roof, showcasing a rugged architectural style. The building has a plinth and deeply-coursed ground-floor walling.
The gable front includes a studded oak door set in a porch with monolithic jambs and a pediment-shaped monolithic slab roof. Above the door, there is a window that has been bricked up, which originally had a rock-faced sill and lintel. The structure is further characterized by heavy rock-faced kneelers and gable copings, with an end stack on the left side. The roof is noted to be damaged. At the rear, there is a stair projection that features a separate doorway and a slab roof.
Inside, the lock-up contains two cells with ashlared walls that are pierced by small light holes, and each cell is equipped with a stone toilet. On the first floor, there is a constable's room that includes a fireplace.
