Description
44 and 46 Sandygate are a pair of cottages dating from 1771, as indicated by a plaque above the doors. They were re-windowed and heightened in the early 19th century. The cottages are built from coursed, squared sandstone and have a stone slate roof. They are designed as a reflected pair, each featuring a single window. The buildings rise three storeys with a cellar.
At the centre, there are paired doors framed by heavy, bonded ashlar surrounds. The flanking windows have horizontal-sliding sashes set in square-faced surrounds, with similar windows on the first floor. The second-floor windows are similar but have flush sills and deep lintels. At the time of resurvey, all windows on the left cottage were boarded. The right cottage has a renewed brick end-stack, while the left end-stack is missing, and the adjacent roof and gable are damaged.
On the rear, an added storey is clearly indicated by rubble stonework beneath the coursed stone of the top storey. The right return features three cellar openings at road level.
