Description

54 and 56 High Street is a house dating from the mid-18th century, which was re-windowed and extended in the early 19th century. It is built of deeply-coursed, dressed sandstone and has a Welsh slate roof. The building has two storeys with a partial attic. The central block is older and features two first-floor windows, with lower additions at each end, each also having one first-floor window.

The central part has quoins and a panelled double door to the left of centre, set within a stone architrave that includes plinth blocks and a cornice. The flanking windows are 16-pane sashes in projecting surrounds that have sunken panels, paterae, and cornices; the first-floor windows match this design. The left wing, which is set back, has a panelled door to the right in a projecting square-cut surround, and a semi-elliptical bay window to the left with an ashlar apron, featuring a 20-pane sash flanked by 8-pane sashes, along with a pulvinated frieze and cornice. Above the bay window, there is a sash with glazing bars that has a plain surround.

The right wing contains a panelled door to the left and a 16-pane sash on each floor, all with plain projecting surrounds. The building features shaped kneelers and ashlar gable copings throughout, with a central brick ridge stack, an end stack to the right, and a rendered end stack to the left.

Inside, there are unusual narrow staircases leading to the attic that fold down from wall recesses, and the roof structure includes collared principal rafter trusses. There is a low outbuilding to the right, but it is not of special interest.
