Description
No 34 on Sandygate is an early 19th-century smithy that has been converted into a builder's store. The building is constructed from coursed, squared sandstone and features a stone slate roof. It is a single-storey structure with a two-window range, and there is a shoeing bay to the right. Attached to the rear left is a short, two-storey parallel range. The front has a 20th-century door set in a square-cut stone surround with a deep lintel. The flanking windows have flush sills and are fitted with casements that have glazing bars, covered by old iron-plate shutters, and are topped with deep stone lintels. The shoeing bay to the right has 20th-century horizontal-sliding doors, and there is a brick end-stack to the left.
Inside, the smithy retains two blacksmith's hearths. In front of the smithy, set into the pavement, are two iron-plate rings, one of which is dished and both have central holes; these were used for heating and fitting iron wheel rims.
