67-71, Thorpe Street

Nos 67-71 on Thorpe Street is a row of cottages that are now derelict. The left-hand part has a core dating back to the 16th century, with extensions and alterations from the 18th and 19th centuries. The cottages feature some internal timber framing, thinly-coursed sandstone, and a Welsh slate roof, with stone slates on the rear. They are two storeys high and have a total of six windows on the first floor. A straight joint to the right of the left cottage indicates the position of a timber-framed truss. Most openings have been bricked up. There are four ground-floor doorways; the one on the left cottage has a wooden lintel that connects to a two-light casement on its left, while the other doors have plain lintels. The ground-floor and first-floor windows show remains of casements, and some have projecting sills. There are renewed brick end stacks and a ridge stack near the centre. At the rear, there are two outshuts with stone slate roofs.

Inside the left-hand cottage, a timber-framed wall partitions it from the row, featuring two wall posts, a sill beam on a plinth wall, and a stud partition above and below a mid-rail, with a curved brace from the rear post to a cambered tie beam. The roof construction in this part of the house consists of collared rafters, side purlins, and rafters that are peg-jointed at the apex. A wall post is visible inside the front wall of the cottage, approximately one metre from the left gable-end wall. Other houses in the row retain chamfered spine beams and have principal rafter trusses with single purlins. Transverse beams flanking the central stack may represent the remains of back-to-back smokehoods. The cottages are in poor condition at the time of resurvey.
