Description
The Gate House is a house dating from the 18th century and early 19th century, constructed of deeply-coursed, squared limestone with pantile and graduated slate roofs. It is two storeys high and features a five-bay 18th-century section with a three-bay 19th-century addition to the rear right, as well as a 20th-century addition in the angle of the plan.
The 18th-century part has large quoins and an added gabled porch to the right of the third bay, which contains a part-glazed door. There is another doorway at the far left, with renewed casements featuring glazing bars in configurations of three, three, and two lights, all in square-faced surrounds, except for bay three which has an architrave. To the right of the porch are two tall tripartite windows. On the first floor, the windows match those on the ground floor of bay three. The building has ashlar gable copings and two stone ridge stacks.
The right return features a taller early 19th-century house that is set back and has a part-glazed door with a traceried fanlight in an ashlar doorcase, complete with a keyed archivolt beneath an open pediment. All bays have sashes with glazing bars in square-faced surrounds and projecting sills, along with an ashlar end stack on the right and a ridge stack to the left of the door. Inside, the 19th-century part includes a contemporary balustraded staircase.
