Description
No. 23 Main Street is a farmhouse dating from the mid-18th century, with some rebuilding in the mid-19th century. It is constructed from coursed, squared sandstone, with a Welsh slate roof, while the 19th-century work features rock-faced sandstone. The building has an L-shaped plan with a wing extending to the rear-right and additional structures in the angle.
The 18th-century facade is located on the right return of the wing and features two storeys with four windows on the first floor. The corners of the building have large quoins. The entrance door is set in a moulded ashlar surround and is flanked on the right by two 2-light square-faced mullioned windows with 4-pane casements, and on the left by a similar window, all beneath a continuous lintel band. A single-light window in the gable end of the front range is double-chamfered and has a dripstone. The first floor of the wing mirrors the ground floor with four windows and a lintel band. There is a brick stack at the end of the right side and a stone gable-end stack on the left side of the front range.
The roadside front features a door with an overlight, flanked by margin-light-glazed sash windows with projecting sills and rock-faced lintels, along with a matching end stack on the left. Inside, the rear wing contains a contemporary staircase with turned balusters and square newels.
