Description

Ulley Grange is a large house dated 1722, with 18th century and 19th century additions to the rear. It was built for Mr. Poynton and features ashlar sandstone with a stone slate roof, part of which is covered with Welsh slate. The house has two storeys and an attic, measuring five bays wide and three bays deep, with a two-storey 19th century addition at the rear left that connects to an early 18th century outbuilding.

The main range has an ashlar plinth and chamfered quoins. There are two square steps leading up to a six-panel door with an overlight that has glazing bars, all framed by a dentilled, bolection-moulded architrave. Above the door is a frieze inscribed with "Mr. Poynton / 1722," and there are consoles supporting a deeply-overhanging cornice. The other bays feature sash windows with glazing bars set in architraves, along with a first-floor band and a central first-floor window with a moulded sill. The eaves cornice leads to a hipped roof that has three dormers, each with casement windows and glazing bars beneath triangular and segmental heads. There are corniced ashlar stacks at each side ridge and a smaller corniced end stack on the left.

At the rear, there is a double-chamfered three-light stair window with two transoms. The left return has a blind cross window on the first floor, while the right return features unequally-hung 15-pane sashes on the ground floor, with the central window having a cornice. The second-floor sashes have glazing bars in recessed surrounds that were formerly fitted with mullions and transoms. Set back on the right is a 19th century hipped-roof wing that links to the 18th century outbuilding, which has square-faced, mullioned windows of three and two lights on two floors, a corniced ridge stack, and external steps leading to a coped end gable on the right. The door is located in the right return and has chamfered quoins.

The interior has not been inspected. Samuel Buck of Rotherham purchased the manor of Ulley in 1721 and 1722, and a later 18th century enclosure award map indicates that the land of Ulley Grange was allotted to Mr. Poynton.
