Description

This milestone, likely dating from the late 18th century, is made of limestone and is set against a roadside wall just north of Leylands Farm Cottages. The milestone has a round-headed shape and is now partly buried in the roadside bank. The upper part of the inscription is mostly weathered away, while the lower part, which is below soil level, is well preserved. The inscription reads: W----------- / Hous- / IX / Miles, which likely indicates the distance to Wentworth House. Early Ordnance Survey maps show several such mileposts, but few remain in their original locations today.
