Description
The gatepiers and attached railings at the north-east end of The Avenue were built in the early 19th century for the Wortley Hall estate. They are made of ashlar sandstone and feature wrought-iron railing panels. On each side of The Avenue, square piers are linked to outer piers by plinth walls and decorative ironwork. Each pier is rusticated and has a frieze block and cornice. The gatepiers are highlighted by frieze paterae and large ball finials. The ironwork panels include plain bars that flank a scrollwork feature and decorative scrollwork cresting, although the cresting on the right panel is displaced.
