Description
The East Gates, gate piers, railings, and outer piers to Weston Hall are likely from the mid-18th century for the Vavasour family. The wrought-iron gates consist of two leaves attached to piers, which are connected by railings to the main outer piers made of ashlar and magnesian limestone. The gates and railings stand approximately 2 metres high, featuring bars with scrolled finials, scroll decorations along the borders, and a flower motif enclosed by circles below the lock bar level. The open-work gate piers are elaborate, approximately 3.5 metres high, square in section, with a central pilaster strip on each face, a cyma-moulded entablature, and a deep cornice topped with gadrooned urns. These urns are weathered and resemble those found in the niches of the Banqueting House, indicating there may have been a second pair of gate piers on the estate, possibly located at the crossing of the Wharfe to the south.
