Description
The gatepiers and attached railings at the south-west end of The Avenue are early 19th century features built for the Wortley Hall estate. They are made of ashlar sandstone and iron railings. The large gatepiers have a side gate on the left and a railing panel set between smaller piers. On the right, there are four railing panels arranged in a curve, with matching intermediate piers and linking dwarf walls topped with ashlar copings. Each main pier has a plinth, a square rusticated shaft, a frieze block adorned with festoons on the front and rear, a cornice, and a moulded plinth supporting a large ball finial. The railings consist of plain round bars with pointed finials, and the intermediate piers match the gatepiers but feature only cornices and blocking stones.
