Description

The Wortley Arms is a public house built in the mid-18th century, with later additions at the rear. It features coursed dressed sandstone and a Welsh slate roof. The building has two storeys with attics and five bays, including a 19th-century wing and a 20th-century addition at the rear right corner, which is not of special interest. The structure has large quoins, and the central doorway is framed by moulded quoins and a cornice supported by brackets. The window surrounds are square-faced, with the mullions removed and later sash windows installed. The ground-floor sashes have 20th-century leaded lights, while the fifth bay is blind. The first floor has 6-pane sashes, with the central window also being blind. The building features shaped kneelers and ashlar gable copings, an end stack at the front-left corner, and two rebuilt ridge stacks with offsets and copings. On the right return, there is a doorway to the right of a window, with two 16-pane sashes above and paired 4-pane sashes in the attic, all openings adorned with cornices. Inside, there are moulded spine beams in the ground-floor room to the left of the door, and a bressumer beam with a cut-out soffit on the right.
