Description
Nos. 6, 8, and 10 Goodramgate is a former coaching inn that has been converted into shops and flats. It dates from the late 18th century and incorporates a late 17th century wing at the rear, with alterations made in the late 19th century and 20th century shopfronts. The building features a stucco front with timber shopfronts and an eaves cornice made of painted cogged brick. The rear wing is constructed of orange-brown brick in stretcher bond on a partly rendered plinth, raised in orange-pink brick with heavy brick dentils. The main roof is covered with slate and has brick stacks and roof lights, while the wing has a pantile roof with a brick stack.
The exterior consists of a three-storey front with six windows. There are five windows on the first floor, and all upper floor windows are four-pane sashes with sills; one window on the second floor towards the left is blocked, and there is a blind panel in the center of the first floor for an inn sign. The right return of the front block features a mutilated three-light mullioned window with a hollow-chamfered surround, and one brick mullion survives on the first floor. Most openings to the wing have been altered, but the first floor retains a two-light square lattice window with an inserted casement on half-L hinges. The interior has not been inspected. Historically, this inn was known as the Red Lion coaching house for Helmsley and Malton.
