Description

27 Colliergate is a house that has been converted into offices. It dates from the late 16th century, with a late 17th-century extension, and was further remodeled and extended in the early 18th century. The building underwent modernisation and had a shopfront added in the 20th century. The front block is timber-framed and covered in painted and incised render, while the rear wing is rendered. It has a pantile roof with a truncated brick stack on the left side.

The exterior features three storeys and attics, with a two-window front. The first and second floor windows are 4-pane sashes with painted stone sills and raised bands above the window heads. There is a dentil and modillion eaves cornice, along with two dormers that have 2x6-pane Yorkshire sashes in the attic.

Inside, the staircase rises around an open well from the ground to the second floor, featuring an open string, heavy turned balusters, a turned newel at the foot, and a moulded ramped-up handrail. The attic extension has a close string staircase with similar, but more slender, balusters. On the first floor, the subdivided rear room has chamfered beams and retains a fireplace, along with raised and fielded dado panelling and a 3-panel cupboard door.

On the second floor, the front rooms are divided by a studded partition wall that includes a doorway blocked with wall tiles. Both rooms feature ogee-stopped chamfered spine beams. The room on the left has a moulded fireplace in a later surround with applied mouldings and a cornice shelf, while the room on the right has an exposed studded cross wall. The rear room also has chamfered beams. In the attic, the timber-framed walls and studded partition remain intact.
